Thursday November 5 the Student Parliament at UiB hosted a Grand Championship of Instant Noodle Eating.
Over the next few days, several Noodle Championships will be held throughut the Norwegian West Coast: in Stavanger, Haugesund, Sogndal, Førde og Stord, as well as the Bergen University Collage and here at UiB. The idea of the noodle championships originates with the Vice President of The Student Parliament at UiB, Tord Lauvlad Bjørnevik (the guy who's standing on top of a pile of noodle packs in all the posters). The point is to direct some attention to the poor student economy in a fun way, which a noodle eating contest does perfectly as it catches two core problems every student has to face, namely that of too little time (as most students have to work part-time jobs beside their full-time studies) and a poor diet (as most students are unable to either afford or prepare proper food).
According to numbers from the Norwegian Student Organization, the average Norwegian student has a minus of 3000 kr each month. In the Governments planned State budget for 2016 the student benefit will be raised by 316 kr per month, i.e. just about enough to buy a pack of instant noodles a day.
Appx. 100 students competed in the Noodle Championship at UiB. After the qualifying rounds, ten finalists remained. Noodle Champion Kasper Valestrand finished an entire portion of instant noodles in an impressive 21 seconds, winning the coveted first prize of a dinner for two at Nama Sushi. He has also secured a place in the Western Norway Chamionship which will take place next year.
